In association with the Montgomery County
Education and Workforce Partnership, LSA recently hosted an Educator-In-The-Workplace
visit with Adam Bailey (World Language Department Head for Plymouth
Whitemarsh High School in Plymouth Meeting, PA) and Robin Keir
(Certified French and Spanish educator at Hatboro-Horsham
High School in Horsham, PA). Mr. Bailey and Mrs. Keir spent
a day with key members of the LSA team to learn about our company
and services, as well as discover how we serve not only our clients,
but also multicultural communities across the globe.
Greeted by Tia Sweri, LSA’s On Location Department Assistant Manager,
the group was invited to observe an LSA interpreter, on location at
a court proceeding in Center City, Philadelphia. Upon return
to LSA headquarters, Mr. Bailey and Mrs. Keir were invited learn about
Translation & Localization with Joseph Bayerl (Department Manager),
Over-the-Phone Interpreting with Lynn Dick (Department Manager), and
Quality Assurance with Stephanie Vine (Interpreter Resource Manager). The
information gathered was formed into lesson plans and shared with
students currently studying world languages.
Mr. Bailey recently sent the following letter to LSA, outlining
his experience and gratitude:
“I wanted to thank you for your help in arranging the Educator-in-the-Workplace
visit with LSA last Thursday. Everyone at LSA was very welcoming
and helpful. Tia (Sweri) was a wonderful guide to the world
of court interpreters, and the different department supervisors were
enthusiastic representatives of their particular areas of the company. I
appreciated the opportunity to talk with the employees and listen
in on a 'real INTERPRETALK' phone call.
Upon return, I visited different classrooms of world languages and
shared with them my experiences at LSA. The students were very
receptive and some genuinely interested in pursuing careers in the
field. Please extend my gratitude to all those who met with
us on Thursday. It is nice to know that companies in the area
are not only providing quality professional services, but they are
also caring enough about the community to open their doors to interested
educators like me.”

Our work with the Virginia Department of Health
was recently featured on NBC 12 News in Virginia. The report showcases
how LSA's innovative INTERPRETALK® service aids communication between
Virginia Department of Health inspectors & local restaurant owners
who speak limited to no English. LSA's
INTERPRETALK® bridges this communication
gap to ensure that restaurant owners
receive the proper instruction to avoid
or resolve health code violations.
In the video, Gary Hagy with the Virginia Department of Health speaks
about communication challenges & how INTERPRETALK® is essential
to protecting public health:
"If the individual doesn't understand what we're asking him
to do, how can we expect him to get it done? It gets really really
frustrating." says Hagy. "I wish we had it (INTERPRETALK®)
years ago...We want to protect public
health and without that link, the communication link, it's not going
to happen."
This is but just one example of how our services are utilized.

Diversity Includes the Deaf Community
When thinking of diversity in the corporate setting, a multinational workforce comes to mind. In fact, there is one cultural community that seems to be under the radar screen when diversity discussions take place: the Deaf Community.
Most people assume that if a person is born and raised in the United States, they are part of the majority American culture. In fact, we know that many first generation Americans also identify with the culture of their parents which becomes a subculture in the U.S. For people born with a severe to profound hearing loss, who attend specialized schools for the Deaf, American Sign Language is their primary language (not English); and they consider themselves members of the Deaf Community, a subculture in America.
People who are deaf and hard of hearing are setting high career goals that challenge and satisfy them. The important thing is to recognize that the deaf and hard of hearing people have skills, talents, determination, experience and loyalty that will enhance the work place.
American Sign Language is the third most prevalent language in the United States.
Rapid changes in technology have allowed Deaf and hard of hearing people to assume jobs that formerly would have been considered inaccessible to them.
Language Services Associates, a full-service language company, has developed an informative workshop that employers can use to tap into the Deaf community to enhance and diversify your workforce community.
LSA’s Deaf Awareness Sensitivity Training workshop offers companies the opportunity to provide employees with a unique opportunity to experience what it is like to live with a hearing loss and provide tips for communicating with people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This is an excellent opportunity to provide a fun workshop on diversity that is different from any other training on the topic of diversity. Click here to learn more.
In addition to providing the workshop, LSA also offers the following services to assist communication with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people:
- American Sign Language Interpreting
- English Transliteration
- Real-Time Captioning (CART)
- Video Remote Interpreting

Graduate of the Year Award from the Small Business Administration

businesses become thriving companies. Laura Schriver, President

Language Services Associates recently provided
a series of Deaf Awareness Sensitivity Training workshops for 100
employees and on-site contractors at the General Services Administration
Eastern Distribution Center. Participants learned the best ways
to communicate with a Deaf co-worker.
Suzanne Dunleavy, LSA's American Sign
Language manager presented the workshops as a part of GSA's Diversity
Training in Burlington, New Jersey on January 18-19, 2006. Participants
learned and discussed myths about Deaf people, and experienced how
hearing loss impedes understanding speech. Said one participant
after the workshop," There are a lot of misconceptions about Deaf
people."
They also experienced the difficulty
of trying to read someone's lips through speech reading, and participated
in fun activities designed to help them think visually rather than
depending exclusively on their hearing for communication. Another
participant said, "It is difficult for Deaf people to do the things
we take for granted; now I am more aware of how I relate to a Deaf
person."
At the conclusion of each workshop, Henry,
a 26-year employee of GSA addressed each group, answering questions
about his experience as a Deaf person, and thanked all of them for
participating. |

S.O.S. to women nationwide: donate one new or nearly new interview
suit during the week of March 19-25, 2006 and help a low-income
woman enter the workforce.

of self-sufficiency and success. S.O.S. - Send One Suit - Week
coincides with Womens History Month and features promotions to
raise awareness and funds for Dress for Success affiliates in the
U.S. and abroad.

donation represents just the first step towards self-sufficiency.
Once a woman is employed, she receives ongoing career development
services from The Professional Womens Group, Dress for Success'
international recognized employment retention program.
Language Services Associates is a
proud sponsor of The Dress for Success organization. If you would
like to donate a suit please send it to:
